A fancy antique French guard chain from the late 19th Century consisting of bumpy silver cable links all gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. It’s fitted with the classic claw clasp at the bottom, complete with a French silver boar mark and is accompanied by an ornate clip embossed with an image of an elegant woman wearing classical clothing and looking in a mirror.
Guard chains were at the height of popularity in the 18th & 19th Century. Both fashionable and practical, they were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and the clasp was usually adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette or muff.
It has a good length, measuring 56 inches in total and can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck to create two festoons of gold.
